It’s hard not to worry these days. There are so many things that can trigger worry or anxiety. But God doesn’t want you to be worried. So I want to share with you some ways to help you overcome worry biblically. And along with that, share a story that I will never forget.

MY STORY

I remember when my first panic attack happened. It was half an hour before I was supposed to be at work and for reasons, I don’t remember I started to panic. It was so bad I had called the doctor for help. I left a message with the nurse and hung up the phone. I started to call my other employees to find someone who could work my shift. But no one could help me.

I prayed and begged for God to take the anxiety away

But He didn’t.

So I had to trust that God was in control and that He wasn’t going to leave me. And that everything was going to be ok.

So when I showed up for work the anxiety I was feeling just disappeared. It was like night and day. I felt like I hadn’t even had a panic attack. I felt so good that when the doctor called me back to tell me she was going to put me on a prescription drug I just about told her I didn’t need it. But I didn’t and I am glad I didn’t because I had another attack the next day.

The point is that I had to trust in the Lord to help me with my anxiety. To help me with my worrying. I honestly didn’t think I was going to make it into work. But I went anyways and trusted the Lord to help me through.

And since then He has been helping me learn how to lean on Him for my problems. And one of the ways He has been doing that is with these 5 steps. I have come a long way from that first attack. I am still learning. But at least now I have a way to help me battle this issue.

6 STEPS TO OVERCOME WORRY

First, you are to be thankful.

Philippians 4:6 says, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." 

God wants you to come to Him for everything. By prayer and by thanking Him. He wants to help you. He doesn’t want you to be miserable and always worrying. You need to thank Him for who He is, not for your circumstances.

Second, you are to think about good things.

Philippians 4:8 says, "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things."

God says to think about what is true. And if you don’t know the truth then you want to think about what you do know. Not what you think you know.

Third, you want to ask the Holy Spirit to give you peace.

John 14:27 says, "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." 

Don’t you just love the fact that God has given you His peace? The peace you get in this world is temporary but to experience God’s peace is peace like no other.

Fourth, you are to trust in God’s strength. Ask God to help you to trust Him more. He loves to hear you ask Him for help.

Isaiah 41:10 says this, "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."  

Fifth, you are to remember that worry does not come from God. Fear is from the enemy.

2 Timothy 1:7 says, "For God did not give us a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power, love, and of self-discipline."

When Satan tries to force you to carry a burden, you can stop him in his tracks and say, “No, I will not carry this burden. I am casting it upon the Lord for Him to carry.”

You are not meant to carry burdens alone. God wants you to tell Him about your problems so that He can take care of them for you. He loves you more than you can imagine.

A PRAYER TO OVERCOME WORRY

Heavenly Father, Thank you for being my heavenly father. Thank you that I don’t have to struggle with worrying. That you want to carry my burdens and lift the weight off my shoulders. You are such a good God. Your word says to trust you when I worry or when I am afraid. Remind me every time that I start to worry that you are there to help me. In Jesus’s name, I pray, Amen

  1. I would love to be able to let God worry about my problems, so I concentrate on Him and his commandments.

    1. I know it’s almost inevitable that we will continue to see worry this side of heaven. But all we can do is try to not worry by spending time with the Lord. The more we have God in our lives the less worried we will be

    1. I am an independent person and it has been really hard for me to let go and let God take care of things! I too have to remind myself that God has got this and I have no reason to worry!

  4. I have a feeling that I always worry about something and sometimes it’s about things that may or may not happen. I try to focus on the good things and just stop those negative thoughts. Great post, thanks for sharing!

    1. Its hard to do! I still worry. I think its something that we will probably struggle with the rest of our lives. But at least God gives us His grace to keep trying!

It reminds of of this verse, which says, “ and provide for those who grieve in Zion— to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor.“ Isaiah 61:3 NIV
    Though this not related to worry per se, this verses gives the promise of what God will give to His children when they mourn. Even with worry, God is our strength. And you are right to add thankfulness as first because it focuses our thoughts to God who is more than sufficient than our cares.

    1. Yes I agree. Worry can take over our minds and make us forget about the blessings we already have and the promises that God has already given us.

  7. I appreciate the reminders. Sometimes the “cure” is so simple and yet we make it so complicated. Ultimately, giving it OVER to God is the only way to feel lighter. I feel like I have had to learn this lesson over and over again with my chronic illness and related anxiety and am still prone to forget!

    1. I am right there with you Olivia! I suffer from anxiety and depression. And I think all of us prob need reminders every now and then. Its so easy to forget and lose site of God and his promises.
