Who is God? Who is this man or being that we can not see? How can we know that he really exists? What are his characteristics?

Some parents often teach their children that God lives in the clouds. God is just sitting in heaven on a cloud listening to us pray. There is some truth to that. He absolutely listens to us while we pray. But I don’t believe God just sits on clouds. I do believe he lives in heaven and he is constantly looking over us.

Psalms 33:13, "The Lord looks down from heaven and sees the whole human race."

God is known as the self-existent One, having no need of being created, since He has existed forever and is the cause of all things. God is spiritual in nature. His power over the physical creation is absolute, such that He can manipulate matter, energy, space, and time at will. He is the Supreme Being, the Creator, and Ruler of all that is.

Now that we know who He is, let’s take a look at his characteristics.

GOD’S CHARACTERISTICS

#1. God is spirit. This means he does not have a physical body. He is invisible. He is spirit.

#2. He never had a beginning. Nobody made God. God simply is, always was, with no beginning. God will never end. He is an absolute being.

#3. He is a holy God. Which means there is no one like him.

Exodus 15:11 (ERV) "Are there any gods like you Lord? No, there are no gods like you- you are wonderfully holy! You are amazingly powerful! You do great miracles!

#4. He is sovereign, he is perfectly in control of everything. (Job 42:2)

Job 42:2 (ERV) "I know you can do everything. You make plans, and nothing can change or stop them."

#5. God is mighty and grand. He is beyond comparison to anything our minds can imagine.

Job 37:5 (ERV) "God's thundering voice is amazing! He does great things that we cannot understand."

#6. He is righteous. Never doing evil or wrong.

Psalms 145:17 (ERV) "Everything the Lord does is good. Everything he does shows how loyal he is."

#7. God remains constant. Never changing, always the same.

Hebrews 13:8 (ERV) "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever."

#8. God is omnipotent. He is able to do anything.

Jeremiah 32:17 (ERV) "Lord God, with your great power you made the earth and the sky. There is nothing too hard for you to do."

#9. God is omniscient. He knows all. He possesses perfect knowledge of all things.

Proverbs 5:21 (ERV) "The Lord clearly sees everything you do. He watches where you go."

#10. God is omnipresent. He is present in all places. At all times.

Jeremiah 23:23-24 (ERV) This message is from the Lord. ” I am God, and I am always near. I am not far away. Someone might try to hide from me in some hiding place. But it is easy for me to see that person, says the Lord, because I am everywhere in heaven and earth.”

#11. He is eternal. He will never cease to exist.

1 Timothy 1:17 (ERV) "Honor and glory to the King who rules forever. He cannot be destroyed and cannot be seen. Honor and glory forever and ever to the only God. Amen."

#12. God is incomprehensible. He is different from man. A man’s mind is finite and unable to grasp God’s infinite ways.

Isaiah 55:8 (ERV) "The Lord says,"My thoughts are not like yours. Your ways are not like mine."

#13. He is merciful. The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness. His mercies are new every morning.

#14. God is gracious. He loves me no matter what I have done or will do.

Psalms 116:5 (ERV) "The Lord is good and merciful; our God is so kind."

#15. He is forgiving. Even though we are disobedient he still forgives us.

Daniel 9: 9 (ERV) "But, Lord our God, you are kind and forgiving, even though we rebelled against you."

And that is just to name a few! God truly is amazing!

CONCLUSION

Take some time and read through these verses and let them sink into your mind and heart. If one of the verses speaks to you, or really means something to you write it down on a post-it note and stick it in a place you will see often. Like on your bathroom mirror or your refrigerator. I find that when I do that it seems to help me when I need it the most. Also, it is a good way to memorize the verse and a really good reminder of how much God really does love you.
