What does God say about me? What does the bible say about me? God will never define you by your past or your past mistakes. The mistakes you have in life are a learning tool. You are to learn from them, but you are not to live in your mistakes. God’s word says you need to keep moving forward and forget about the past.

"Forget what is behind and strain toward what is ahead" (Philippians 3:13 NIV).
"Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past" (Isaiah 43:18 NIV).

God doesn’t want you to focus on your past and believe lies about yourself. He wants you to see yourself the way that he sees you. He doesn’t look at your mistakes or your past. When he looks at you he sees Jesus. Jesus died and took all your sins away. Every mistake you have ever made is gone because of Jesus. Now God doesn’t see your sin he sees your heart. He sees you are holy and blameless. He sees that you are good and pleasing. God sees that you are perfect.

WHAT DOES GOD REQUIRE OF ME?

You don’t have to earn God’s acceptance because Jesus did all the work for you when he died on the cross.

Let me explain.

Back in the old testament days, people had to sacrifice their animals in order to be forgiven for the sins they committed. God needed blood to be shed in order to forgive people of their sins.

Now in the new testament days (the days you live in now) Jesus was born to save you from your sins. He died on the cross in your place, as a sacrifice for all the sins you have committed. God does not require any more sacrifice (blood) in order for you to be forgiven in his eyes. Jesus took care of that for you.

He loved you enough that he sent his only son to die on a cross so that he could have a relationship with you. Now let me show you in the bible what God thinks of you and what that relationship looks like.

YOUR IDENTITY IN CHRIST

God’s word says you were created for a purpose.

Ephesians 2:10 (ERV)says, "God has made us what we are. In Christ Jesus, God made us new people so that we would spend our lives doing the good things he had already planned for us to do."

You were created in His own image.

So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:27 NIV).

You were chosen for God.

In Christ, he chose you before the world was made. He chose you in love to be his holy people-people who could stand before him without any fault. And before the world was made, God decided to make you his child through Jesus Christ. This was what he wanted, and it pleased him to do it (Ephesians 1:4-5 ERV).

You are forgiven.

If you confess your sins, God will forgive you. You can trust God to do this. He always does what is right. He will make you clean from all the wrong things you have done (1 John 1:9 ERV).

You are dearly loved.

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:38-39 NIV).

You belong to Christ.

Galatians 3:29 (ERV) says, "You belong to Christ, so you are Abraham's descendants. You get all of God's blessings because of the promise that God made to Abraham."

And you are his child, an heir to God.

"Now if we are his children, then we are heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory," (Romans 8:17 NIV).

So you have a choice of either believing what God says about you, or you believe the lies of the enemy.

Is it hard for you to believe what the bible says about you? Here is a prayer that may help.

A PRAYER TO BELIEVE YOU ARE LOVED

Heavenly Father, I can not seem to wrap my brain around the fact that you love me no matter what I have done or will do. Help me to accept these truths from your word so that I can start to live like I am your child. Happy and free from living in bondage. Thank you so much for forgiving me and for loving me. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.

  3. I am somewhere on this journey right now. Finding my way inside of a religion I abandoned is hard and I’m not sure who I am in relation to it. I feel judged and this helped me realize the only judgement is me of myself.

    1. I am my own worst critic..and I am still learning that God does not judge us..he sees perfection in us..and your right we are the ones that judge ourselves..it’s hard but it will get easier the more you seek out God..check out some of my other posts..they may give you some more added encouragement

  4. Hey Cori,

Great blog and a really encouraging blog post.

I like how you say ‘God will never define you by your past mistakes or the type of person you think you are. He will never look at you and say, “You CANT because of what you have done”. Instead, he will say, “You CAN in spite of what has been done.”’

And I totally agree that mistakes are a learning tool. In fact, in my book there’s no such this as failure, only feedback!

You’ve listed some awesome nuggets on finding our identity in Christ.

Thank you so much sharing such an encouraging message.

    Blessings,

    Pedro
