Overcoming the Battle in Your Mind

Do you have an ongoing war going on in your mind? One minute you want to walk with God and do what is right and the next minute you want to do it your way. You want to have control. So how do you go about overcoming the battle in your mind?

THE DEVIL’S DECEPTION

The devil likes to take and make strongholds of deception so that you believe something that is untrue and it takes you away from God’s healing and truth. He works on you one lie at a time until you are a prisoner of deception. You hear things like “God doesn’t care about me” or “I am never going to make a difference” or maybe “God doesn’t hear my prayers.”

The apostle Paul even had a war raging in his mind.

Romans 7: 21-23 says," I have discovered this principle of life-that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. I love God's law with all my heart. But there is another power within me that is a war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me."

What Paul is trying to say here is that there is a battle going on in his mind. One minute he wants to do what is right and the next minute he doesn’t. Have you ever felt this way before? I know I have.

YOUR LIFE ARE YOUR THOUGHTS

A lot of your problems are related to a wrong thought process. Problems such as anxiety, eating disorders, relationship issues, and addictions are all related to how you think.

An example would be if you say you can’t do something then you probably won’t do it but if you say you can then you probably will do it. If you dwell on your problems your problems will only seem bigger. If you feel like a victim you will become a victim. If instead by the power of Christ you believe you can overcome the issue then you will be able to overcome your circumstances.

HOW DO YOU DO BATTLE WITH YOUR MIND?

2 Corinthians 10: 5 says, "We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ."

First, you identify what lies you believe. For example, some of the lies that I have believed:

I can’t do this anymore.

I am not good enough.

How can God love me with all that I have done in the past?

I hate the way I look. I am never going to lose this weight.

But with God’s help, you can renew your mind so that you start thinking more about the truth rather than the lies you have grown accustomed to thinking.

Romans 12: 2 says this, "Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect."

So now that you have identified the lies, you then have to replace the lie or lies with the truth of God’s word.

John 8: 32 says, "And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

Take a look at the lies I stated above and see what truth I used to replace the lie I believed.

Lie #1 – “I can’t do this anymore” can be replaced with “I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.”(Philippians 4: 13)

Lie #2 – “I am not good enough” can be replaced with “….you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.”(Matthew 10: 31)

Lie #3 – “How can God love me with all that I have done in the past” can be replaced with “He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth so great is his love for those who obey him, as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our sins from us.”(Psalms 103: 10)

Lie #4 – “I hate the way I look. I am never going to lose this weight” can be replaced with “…I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” (Psalms 139: 14)

You identify your lie and then you replace it with God’s word (the truth). Then every time that lie enters your mind you need to say out loud the verse to replace it. Eventually, your mind will go straight to the verse in God’s word rather than the lie you have believed for so long.

You say the truth until you start believing the truth. And so therefore the power of God will have set you free from the bondage the devil has put you in.

I am so thankful that we have a God that doesn’t want us in bondage. He wants us free and happy not living in fear and condemnation.

This exercise will take some time to master. I wish I could tell you that it will get better overnight. But training our minds to go in a different direction will take time. But don’t lose heart. God will not give up on you. Continue to repeat God’s word over and over and soon your mind will be free of those lies and negativity.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, I am so grateful that you don’t want me to be in bondage. Help me to identify the lies I have been holding on to and give me your truth to replace those lies. Thank you for your truth and your word. And thank you for your love. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
