As long as I can remember I have always been insecure. It started in elementry school being teased by this one boy who was in a grade higher than me. I have never been happy with the way I look and I suppose that could be the reason why I am still insecure as an adult.
The definition of insecure is not being confident or lacking confidence, being unsure, having self doubt, being hesitant, fearful, worried, or shy. An insecure person might constantly doubt their own intelligence or worth. They are not confident about their relationships with other people. And it produces anxiety about their goals, relationships, and their ability to handle certain situations.
It can come from a variety of causes. Such as a traumatic event like divorce, bankruptcy, or loss, previous experiences, learning by observing others, or social environments like work or home.
Being insecure in a biblical perspective can be any of these 3 things:
1. you doubt God’s goodness and character
2. you are attaching your self-worth and identity to the things of this world
3. you do not have enough faith to know that God will help you with your problem
Let’s talk about each of these things in depth and also take a look at some examples of insecurity in the bible, some bible verses that will help comfort you when you feel insecure, and how to help you overcome your insecurities.
DOUBTING GODS GOODNESS
When you doubt God’s goodness you are saying that you don’t believe that he is a good God.
Right now I can relate to that feeling. I get discouraged often because I think God doesn’t want to bless me. I have an Etsy shop and this blog. I have had the blog for 3 years and I still only get a handful of viewers a day. My shop is the same. I start to question whether or not I heard God’s calling when he called me to start the blog and open the store.
I have to tell myself everyday that God is a good God and he wants what is best for me. And that may mean that I don’t get what I want or the way I want it. God’s ways are better than your ways. He knows what the future holds. And this gives me comfort because I know that he is in control of everything.
ATTACHING YOUR SELF WORTH TO WORLDLY THINGS
This makes me think about my past and what I have done. I think that my worth or my identity revolves around the person I was years ago. When I have already given my past sins to the Lord. And he says that I am forgiven. As far as the east is from the west. And that he remembers my sins no more.
So why do I still think that God sees my past and not me?
It goes back to doubting God’s goodness. Doubting who he says he is. Doubting who he says I AM.
And what I have to remember is that I am a child of God.(1 John 3:2) And that he loves me no matter what I have done or will do. He doesn’t see my past failures. He sees Jesus when he looks at me. He sees perfection. He sees his masterpiece. (2 Corinthians 5:21)
NOT HAVING ENOUGH FAITH
Having enough faith can be hard when you are struggling with insecurity. But what you have to remember is that God is faithful. And what he promises in his word will happen. (Luke 1:37) He is a God that does not lie.(Numbers 23:19)
EXAMPLES OF INSECURITY IN THE BIBLE
Lets look at 3 characters in the bible that had insecurity.
Moses struggled with his speech. Fearing that he would not be able to convince the Israelites of God’s presence. (Exodus 4:10)
Jeremiah thought that he was to young to be used as one of God’s prophets. (Jeremiah 1:6)
Gideon told the Lord that he was from the weakest clan in his tribe. (Judges 6:12)
But the Lord still chose them and he tells them that he will be with them and to not be afraid.
When you surrender your weaknesses to God, his strength manifests in you. They become opportunities for God to display his power. Don’t let insecurity hold you back; trust in God’s strength and step out in faith!
BIBLE VERSES FOR INSECURITY
Here are some bible verses that will help you when you are dealing with insecure thoughts.
Ephesians 1: 4-6 says, Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure. So we praise God for the glorious grace he has poured out on us who belong to his dear Son.
-God chose you
-God adopted you
-God accepted you
Romans 8: 31-32 says, What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? Since he did not spare even his own son but gave him up for us all, won't he also give us everything else?
God is absolutely, completely, and totally on your side.
1 John 3:1 says, See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are! But the people who belong to this world don't recognize that we are God's children because they don't know him.
There is nothing you can do to earn God’s love. He loves you because he wants to love you. You are his child. He is your spiritual father.
1 John 4:18 says, Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love.
God loves you with a perfect love. He sees all your flaws and struggles and weaknesses and he still loves you completely.
1 Corinthians 6:11 says, Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the spirit of our God.
-God washed you
-God sanctified you
-God has justified you
Your past does not define you. Because of Jesus, God has declared you not guilty and you are forgiven in his sight.
HOW TO OVERCOME INSECURITY
1.Embrace who you are and who God says you are (check out my blog post titled “What does God say about me”)
2. Replace all negative self talk with God’s truth. To do that you find a verse that pertains to your circumstance. And you memorize that verse. So everytime you feel upset or think negative thoughts, you replace that thought with the verse you memorized. This is renewing your mind.
3. Remember all the things God has done for you in the past and remember that he is capable and willing to do it again.
4. Pray for God to help you trust in his presence and his sufficiency. To show you his overwhelming goodness and outrageous love for you. To help you trust his plans instead of your own. To trust the massive things he is already doing in your life, whether you can see them or not.
