Have you ever stared at a stack of bills and wondered how in the world you were going to pay them? I’ve been there—more than once. There were seasons in my life when money was so tight I didn’t know if I would have enough for groceries, the electric bill, or even gas to get to work. Financial worry can be overwhelming, discouraging, and heavy. But if you’re walking through a similar season, I want you to know this: you are not alone, and God has not forgotten you.

In today’s post, I want to share both the 8 practical steps that helped me get out of debt and the faith lessons that set me free. This is more than a post about money—it’s a testimony of how God provided, strengthened my faith, and showed Himself faithful in ways I will never forget.

My prayer is that as you read, you feel encouraged to trust God with your finances in a deeper way. He sees your needs. He knows your situation. And He cares for you more than you can imagine.

When Money Is Tight: The Emotional and Spiritual Battle

Financial stress doesn’t just affect your bank account—it affects your heart. It brings fear, shame, anxiety, and the pressure of feeling like everything depends on you.

But the truth is, financial worry is also a spiritual battle.

The enemy loves to whisper:

  • “You won’t make it.”
  • “God won’t come through for you.”
  • “You’re on your own.”

But Scripture tells us something completely different.

In 2 Timothy 1:7, God reminds us:
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

Fear is not from God.

Worry is not from God.

God wants to replace that fear with peace, trust, and confidence in His provision.

Jesus tells us clearly in Matthew 6:31–34 not to worry about what we will eat, drink, or wear because “your heavenly Father knows that you need them.” Instead, we are called to “seek first His kingdom,” trusting that everything else will fall into place.

My Testimony: How God Met Me in Debt and Uncertainty

A. My Season of Credit Card Debt

I’ve been in financial debt more than once. There were times in my life when I was in deep credit card debt and felt like there was no end in sight. I tried many things to fix the situation, but nothing seemed to work… until I began taking intentional steps and trusting God through the process.

B. When My Husband Lost His Job

One of the hardest seasons came in 2021 when my husband lost his job—the income that paid all of our bills. I wasn’t working at the time, and fear immediately set in. How would we pay the mortgage? Buy groceries? Keep the lights on?

But in that valley, God provided in ways I cannot explain.

Bills were paid.

Food was on the table.

We never went without anything we needed.

We prayed, sought Him, and trusted His provision—and God never let us down. He carried us through every single day.

C. A Test of Obedience

Years earlier, in 2002, God asked something of me that felt impossible. He told me to start giving to a charity every month.

But I was in debt.

We barely had enough to get by.

Still, I obeyed.

Every time a bill was due—or the charity giving day arrived—I prayed for God to provide. And every single time, I’d go to work at my parents’ restaurant, and the place would be packed. I always made exactly what I needed for the bill that was due that day.

God provided over and over and over again.

He was showing me that He is faithful when we obey, even when it doesn’t make sense.

Practical Steps That Helped Me Find Financial Stability

These are the real steps I used to climb out of debt and find freedom:

1. I Used a Consolidation Firm

A reputable consolidation company helped me merge my bills into one monthly payment. They negotiated with credit card companies and lowered what I owed. This brought structure, relief, and direction.

2. I Spent Only What I Could Pay in Cash

My motto became:
“If I can’t pay cash for it, I don’t need it.”
This simple boundary changed everything.

3. I Cut Back on Monthly Bills

I reduced my phone plan, utility costs, and cable. Small cuts added up to big savings.

4. I Saved a Little Every Paycheck

Even when it was only $5, I put something into savings. That small emergency fund brought peace and helped when unexpected expenses came up.

5. I Shopped for Groceries With Intention

I stuck strictly to my list. No extras. No snacks. No impulse buys.
Also—never shop hungry. It will save you tons.

6. Recently I have been using the Debt Snowball Method

I follow Dave Ramsey’s method:

  • Pay off the smallest debt first
  • Make minimum payments on others
  • Roll the paid-off amount onto the next debt

This “snowball” keeps me motivated to continue while watching my debt go down.

7. I Still Tithed to My Church

Even when I didn’t have the money to give away, I gave anyways. Just like when I gave to the charity. If God can help me give to that charity, then God will help me tithe to the church.

8. I also Recently read “Simple Money, Rich Life” by Bob Lotich

Bob specializes in Biblical Finances. He has been doing it for over 15 years with his wife. For those of you who have a hard time trusting what people say (there are so many out there telling us what to think and do), then let me reassure you that Bob knows what he is talking about. He has been able to get out of $400,000 in debt and give away $1 million dollars. He knows his stuff. This book explains how he was able to get out of debt (the steps he took) and how he gave back to the kingdom of God. If you are on the fence, click this link and it will take you to his website. I recommend this book to anyone looking to get out of debt and start saving for your future. Simple Money, Rich Life Book

The Biblical Foundation for Financial Peace

A. God Promises to Provide (Matthew 6:31–34)

He knows our needs before we even ask.
He calls us to seek Him first.
And He promises to take care of us.

B. Fear Is Not From God (2 Timothy 1:7)

When fear tries to overwhelm you, remind yourself:
“God did not give me fear—He gave me peace.”

C. God Will Never Leave Us Without Support (Hebrews 13:5)

This verse says God will not fail you, abandon you, or leave you without support.
That promise carried me through every financial hardship.

How Trusting God Changes Everything

Trusting God doesn’t magically erase your bills—but it does remove the fear.
It shifts your focus from “How will I do this?” to “God will help me through this.”

Peace comes not from having more money, but from trusting the One who provides it.

God used every financial struggle I walked through to strengthen my faith, teach me obedience, and show me His faithfulness in powerful ways.

He will do the same for you.

Encouragement for Your Journey

If you’re overwhelmed, discouraged, or unsure how you’ll make it—take heart.

God sees you.

God loves you.

God has a plan for your situation.

Take one step at a time. Trust Him with each one. And let His peace lead you forward.

A Prayer for You

Father, I lift up every person reading this.
You see their financial struggles, their fears, and their needs.
Provide for them in ways that remind them of Your love and faithfulness.
Give them wisdom, courage, and peace as they take each step forward.
Help them trust You—not their circumstances—and draw near to You in every decision.
In Jesus’ name, amen.

Trusting is hard. But if you can remember to repeat those verses, I mentioned when fear and negative thoughts crowd your mind. Then the enemy doesn’t stand a chance. And the more you repeat God’s promises the more peace you will have.
