If you want a simple way to pray but are not sure where to begin, the ACTS prayer method gives you a gentle outline: adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and supplication. It is not a formula you have to get right. It is simply a way to make space for worship, honesty, gratitude, and the needs you want to bring to God.
What is the ACTS prayer method?
ACTS is an acronym that helps you move through four parts of prayer:
- Adoration: praise God for who He is.
- Confession: honestly bring sin and the places you need His mercy.
- Thanksgiving: thank Him for His faithfulness and gifts.
- Supplication: bring your needs and the needs of others before Him.
You do not need to use every part for the same amount of time. Let this outline support your conversation with God, not turn prayer into a checklist.
A, adoration: begin with praise
Start by turning your attention to God. You might thank Him for being faithful, merciful, near, wise, or strong. Jesus began the Lord's Prayer by honoring the Father: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name” (Matthew 6:9).
When you do not know what to say, try reading a Psalm slowly and turning one line into praise. Psalm 23, Psalm 46, and Psalm 103 are meaningful places to start.
C, confession: come honestly
Confession is a chance to be truthful with God. Ask Him to show you where you have sinned, resisted His leading, or held onto hurt. Then receive His forgiveness with humility and trust. First John 1:9 reminds believers that God is faithful to forgive and cleanse those who confess their sin.
This is not about trying to earn God's love. It is about bringing your whole heart into His light and asking Him to help you walk in a new way.
T, thanksgiving: notice God's faithfulness
Thank God for specific gifts: daily provision, answered prayers, people you love, Scripture that has encouraged you, or the strength to take the next step. Gratitude does not deny that life is hard. It helps you remember that God has been present in the middle of it.
If you feel blank, begin with one small thing from today. A few honest words of thanks are enough.
S, supplication: bring your requests
Supplication simply means asking. Bring your needs to God clearly, whether you need wisdom, comfort, healing, provision, courage, or direction. Pray for the people entrusted to you too. Philippians 4:6 invites us to bring every request to God with thanksgiving.
You do not have to make your request sound polished. Tell God what is on your heart, then ask for His will and help to obey whatever He shows you.
A simple ACTS prayer example
Father, You are good, faithful, and near to me. Please forgive me for the ways I have relied on myself instead of You. Thank You for carrying me through today and for the people You have placed in my life. I bring You the worries I am holding, and I ask for wisdom, peace, and courage for the next step. Help me trust Your will and keep my heart close to You. In Jesus' name, amen.
How to use ACTS in everyday prayer
Try using this pattern for five quiet minutes. Write one sentence for each letter, pray it aloud, or keep the four words beside your Bible. Over time, you may find that one part needs more attention on a particular day. That is okay. The goal is not a perfect prayer. The goal is to come to God with an open heart.
