6 Biblical Ways to Overcome Jealousy and Comparison

Have you ever looked at someone else’s life and felt jealous of what they have? Maybe they got the raise, the opportunity, the relationship, or the blessing you were hoping for. Jealousy and comparison can quietly steal your peace and make you feel discouraged, overlooked, or frustrated with your own life. But God’s Word has a better way. In this article, we will look at how to overcome jealousy biblically with Psalm 37 and what it says about fixing your eyes back on the Lord.

Before we dig into Psalm 37 I want to take a quick look at James 4:2 which says, "You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God."

This verse shows us that jealousy can lead to wrong desires and wrong actions. It reveals a heart that is not at rest in God. That is why it is so important to deal with jealousy before it takes deeper root.

Let’s go ahead and dig deep into Psalm 37:1–6 and see what it has to say about what you can do if you have any kind of jealousy in your heart.

Psalms 37: 1-6 says, Don't worry about the wicked or envy those who do wrong. Like grass, they soon fade away. Like spring flowers, they soon wither. Trust in the Lord and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper. Take delight in the Lord; he will give you your heart's desires. Commit everything you do to the Lord, Trust him, and he will help you. He will make your innocence radiate like the dawn, and the justice of your cause will shine like the noonday sun.

6 BIBLICAL WAYS TO OVERCOME JEALOUSY

#1. Do not envy people who do wrong. Sometimes you may witness other people do wrong and get blessed for it. But you are not to be envious of those people. For they will wither and fade like spring flowers. You are to be still and let God handle those people. It is not your job to figure out why they seem to be prospering. Your job is to trust God and remember that He sees everything.

Psalms 37: 1 says, Don't worry about the wicked or envy those who do wrong. For like grass, they soon fade away. Like spring flowers, they soon wither.
#2. Be still and let God handle what troubles you. You are not to follow their ways. Jealousy can tempt you to compare, compete, or even compromise. But God has called you to stay faithful. Even when it feels like others are moving ahead and you are standing still, you are still to trust the Lord and continue doing what is right.

Psalms 37: 7 says, Be still in the presence of the Lord, and wait patiently for him to act......

#3. Delight yourself in the Lord. When you focus and make the Lord your joy, the desires that grow in your heart will be God’s desires. And these desires will be what bring you lasting peace and joy. When your heart is satisfied in God, jealousy begins to lose its grip on you because your joy is no longer based on what someone else has.

Psalms 37: 4 says, take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart's desires.

#4. Commit your way to the Lord. Remember what He has done for you. And remember that God is God. Just because someone else gets blessed does not mean He will not bless you too. What God is doing in their life does not take away from what He can do in yours. Committing everything to the Lord means surrendering your desires, your timing, and your expectations to Him and trusting that His plan for you is good.

Psalms 37: 5 says, commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him, and he will help you.

#5. Thank God instead of comparing. One of the most powerful ways to fight jealousy is to thank God—both for what He is doing in your life and even for what He is doing in someone else’s life. Gratitude breaks the power of comparison. It helps shift your focus off what is missing and back onto God’s goodness.

Philippians 1: 3 says, Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God.

When you are jealous of others, the enemy is successful in shifting your focus away from God and onto your circumstances. When your eyes are fixed on your circumstances and the rights you believe you deserve, you end up making unwise decisions. And therefore, you miss out on God’s blessings. Jealousy may seem small at first, but if left unchecked, it can lead to disorder, selfish ambition, and other kinds of sin.

James 3: 16 says, for wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind.

#6. Stop the negative self-talk and compare yourself less to others. Self-criticism is where you put yourself down and compare yourself unfavorably to others. When you do this, jealousy often grows stronger. But when you begin to see yourself the way God sees you, you will react differently. When you feel more secure in who God made you to be, you will more than likely respond to jealousy differently. You will not be so jealous because you are content with who you are in Christ.

If jealousy often leads you into self-criticism and comparison, that may be a sign that God wants to heal how you see yourself. Sometimes jealousy is not just about wanting what someone else has. Sometimes it reveals that you have forgotten your own worth in Christ. CONCLUSION

Jealousy does not have to control your heart. When you bring those feelings honestly before God, He can help you change. He can replace envy with peace, comparison with contentment, and resentment with gratitude. The more you trust Him with your life, the freer you will become to celebrate what He is doing in the lives of others while resting in His plan for your own.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, please forgive me for I am jealous of ________.
I don’t want to feel this way and I know you can somehow change my attitude toward this person. Help me to be able to look at them and see them from your perspective, not mine. And help me to be happy for them. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen
