God speaks to His children in many different ways. Sometimes it can be hard to tell if it is really God speaking to you or just your own thoughts or even the enemy trying to influence you. Therefore, I want to give you 5 signs to show you that it is God speaking to you.
First, God speaks to you through His Word.
A good sign would be when the same verse or theme keeps showing up in your reading. An example would be when I was afraid to take prescription medications. I never wanted to be on them in the first place, but the Lord was trying to show me to not be afraid. He showed me several times in His Word to not be afraid. But I was still afraid. Until He showed me a specific verse, Jeremiah 29:11. In the moment He showed me that verse I felt a sense of peace and comfort, and I knew He was speaking to me.
Second, God can speak to you through other people.
For example, you may seek wise advice as Moses did.
Exodus 18: 14, 17, 19 say this, "Jethro saw Moses judging the people. He asked, Why are you doing this? Why are you the only judge? And why do people come to you all day?"…Moses father-in-law said to him, "This isn't the right way to do this."….Now listen to me. Let me give you some advice. And I pray God will be with you. You should continue listening to the problems of the people. And you should continue to speak to God about these things."
Just make sure that you are receiving Godly counsel. What they say must be in line with what God’s Word has to say.
1 John 4: 1 says, My dear friends, many false prophets are in the world now. So don't believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see if they are from God.
Third, God can speak to you through dreams or visions.
God doesn’t normally speak to me through dreams or visions. But there was a time where I was coming out of a dream and God had laid it on my heart to start taking a supplement that I used to take years ago. He wanted me to start taking it again. I wondered why and He didn’t tell me why. But I didn’t hesitate to start taking it again.
You also see this throughout the bible in different circumstances. An example would be when God warned the three wise men in a dream.
Matthew 2: 12 says, But God warned the wise men in a dream not to go back to Herod. So they went home to their own country a different way.
Fourth, God can speak to you through your “inner knowing”.
What I mean by that is if you are a born-again Christian you will have the Holy Spirit living inside of you. God uses the Holy Spirit to speak to you.
John 14: 26 says, But the Helper will teach you everything and cause you to remember all that I told you. This helper is the Holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name.
But how can you know if it’s from the Holy Spirit and not from your own desires? Use the test of God’s Word and character. If it doesn’t line up with what God’s Word says and it doesn’t align with God’s character, then it’s not coming from God.
A good example would be if your thought was a fearful thought, you know that God is a God of love not fear. He doesn’t give you a spirit of fear, but of peace, love, and a sound mind. Satan deals in fear and anxiety. So those fearful thoughts would be from the enemy.
Fifth, God will give you peace.
A good example in the Bible is Hannah. She was in tears and agony crying for a child from God, but there was a particular day she prayed to God, and after praying she wiped away her tears, washed her face, and ate because she had peace that God had answered her prayers. Not too long after she conceived and gave birth to Samuel.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, God speaks to everyone differently. As we grow with the Lord, hearing from Him will get easier. We will know when He is speaking to us and when it is just our own desires and wants. God wants to speak to us. We just need to be still and be willing to hear from Him.
